Weaving Mill

Step inside the Tartan Weaving Mill and discover Edinburgh’s only working commercial weaving mill, right beneath your feet on the lower floors. From special viewing areas, you can watch the talented weavers in action as they create Scotland’s most iconic fabrics.

Every year, thousands of yards of tartan, blankets, and scarves are woven here—featuring world-famous designs like Royal Stewart, Thomson Camel, Black Watch, and clan tartans, alongside exciting new tartans made to private order.

Right next to the Castle, the Tartan Weaving Mill offers five floors of shopping heaven. Here you’ll find one of the city’s widest selections of cashmere, lambswool, wool, silk blends, and other knitwear—all under one roof. With countless brands, colours, and styles to choose from, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to take home a touch of Scottish luxury.

Handmade Kilts

The fabric woven on the mill’s century-old looms isn’t just on display—it’s available to buy right in the factory shop. For something truly special, you can even take your chosen tartan to the in-house kiltmakers, who, by special request, can craft a made-to-measure, hand-sewn kilt ready for you to wear the very next day!
